Prix Retina for Thomas Kurmann

Thomas Kurmann, PhD student at the ARTORG Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging lab, has been awarded the Prix Retina 2020 for his research on "Expert-level Automated Biomarker Identification in Optical Coherence Tomography Scans". Together with doctors from the Inselspital Department of Ophthalmology he had developed and tested a machine learning method capable of consistently identifying a wide range of common retinal biomarkers from OCT scans.

In ophthalmology, retinal biological markers, or biomarkers, play a critical role in the management of chronic eye conditions and in the development of new therapeutics. With the numbers of scans steadily increasing due to increased OCT usage and rising chronic retinal conditions, automated analysis of scans using machine learning algorithms provides a cost effective and reliable alternative to assist ophthalmologists in clinical routine and research. Based on a convolutional neural network the tool developed by Thomas Kurmann and his team is able to provide results within seconds, thus supporting the doctor with comprehensive image analysis during a consultation with the patient.
